Ember Months - Vehicle Owners Tasked On Safety

The National President of Vehicle Owners Association of Nigeria (VOAN), Odo Vincent Okoko, has urged motorists in Abuja to be cautious and ensure that their vehicles are road worthy especially during the Ember months.

Okoko said accidents are common during these months because some vehicle owners would want to meet their 2016 target within one month.

"We are in the Ember months and these months are notorious for avalanche of accident occasioned by rush. Vehicle owners should be cautious and also bear in mind that this period is not a favourable season in terms of accident rate," he said.

He said the association is working on articulating the Accident Prevention Awareness Campaign, High-Way Sanitation and Automobile Safety Bill 2017, adding that the bill seeks to assist the country meet the target set by the United Nations for reducing the current accident rate by 50 percent in 2020.

Besides the empowerment of the association to remove scrapped, accident, burnt or abandoned vehicles and all automobile wastes from Nigerian highways, he said the association would also engage in sensitization campaigns to change the negative orientation and attitude of Nigerian medical practitioners towards road accident victims.
