FG moves to reduce road accidents on highways

BENIN—MINISTER of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, has said that moves were on by his ministry to forestall accidents on newly constructed federal roads in the country, even as he appealed to drivers and other road users to adhere to standard traffic regulations to avoid accidents on the roads.

He noted that following the construction of a link bridge at Utor, Delta State, travellers from the eastern parts of the road, who now access the road as a short cut to Abuja and other parts of the North, needed to adhere to standard practices for road users.

The minister, who spoke to newsmen in Uromi, Edo State, shortly after a tour of ongoing federal roads in the state, said that his ministry was working with the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, to step up enlightenment campaigns especially on the reconstructed Ubiaja-Emu Road.

Noting that the cost of the road projects was over N9.8 billion, he commended the contractor handling the project, Mothercat Nig. Ltd., pointing out that the contractor was ahead of schedule and that the job was of high quality.

He said one of the objectives of the Goodluck Jonathan administration was to make rural communities accessible from urban areas, a factor he said before now had stalled the development of the economy of the rural areas for years.

He added that ongoing road projects in Edo State including the Ivue- Edeinu-Ewu Road in Edo Central and the Auchi-Ekperi-Uzea-Uromi-Afuda-Road in the Central and Northern districts of the state, were targeted at connecting the rural communities to the urban areas.

He said: “A few months ago, we commissioned the pedestrian bridge by the Auchi Polytechnic gate as well as the Okhio Bridge and the Weppa Bridge. Today, we undertook the inspection of ongoing federal roads in Edo State, particularly the road that starts from the Auchi Polytechnic gate through Ekperi Uzea, Uromi Afuda and Usugbenu. The other section is from Ivue to Ibore and Ewu section.

“The one from Ivue to Ibore to Ewu was done by the former Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, before I was born. The road is part of the old network of federal roads under the Western Region government of the 50s.

“One of the objectives of the Jonathan administration is to provide access to the rural areas. We want to remove the problem of inaccessibility that had crippled the economy of the rural areas.
