President, Council of the International Civil Aviation Authority, ICAO, Olomuyiwa Bernard, has stated that exorbitant taxes and duties imposed on carriers one of the factors hindering the growth of air transportation in developing countries.
According to him, the proliferating taxes gave rise to negative economic impacts on states, adding that ICAO was working to help developing states address this challenge.
Bernard spoke during the 21st General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) held between September 12 and 17 in Medellin, Colombia.
In his address posted on YouTube, Olomuyiwa estimated that by 2030 the global traffic of aircraft movement and passengers would double with 6 billion passengers and 200, 000 aircraft movement as against the present 100, 000 commercial flights operated daily.
He said that efforts must be channelled to ensure that the doubling of air passengers would not amount to doubling of mishaps and safety incidents.
He added there must be intensified effort to address the challenges of the sector to maximize the benefits of aviation and tourism convergence.
