Traffic - Commuters Groan in Mile 12

Lagos — Commuters plying the Mile 12 road are presently groaning due to the gridlock witnessed on the road in the last two weeks.

The gridlock is reportedly caused by the construction works, including barricades, going on in the area.

A commuter who regularly plies the road, Mrs Kemi Lawal, said that she almost received a query for getting late to her office late on Monday.

Lawal, a civil servant, narrated her experience: "I spent three hours in the Mile 12 traffic on Monday. My boss had warned me, many times, because of my lateness which I always attributed to the gridlock on the road. But he couldn't bear it on Monday when I arrived late to the office again. I came in around 11.00a.m. He almost gave me a query."

Mr Azeez Ajibola, an artisan and resident of Ikorodu, said; "The situation is very pathetic. The gridlock made me to miss two business appointments last week. I will suggest that the construction works should be done in the night when traffic is light."

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has however apologised to commuters plying the Mile 12 road, over the gridlock caused by the ongoing construction works.

Infrastructure Engineer of LAMATA, Abidemi Atobatele, gave the apology during a radio programme tagged 'LAMATA 360 degrees.'

He said that the state government was aware of the difficulties being faced by commuters at Mile 12 and urged them to continue to cooperate with the authority.

"We are really sorry for the inconveniences. We understand what the commuters in that axis are going through. I will like to thank them for their cooperation. They were with us during the two and half years that we did BRT extension in that corridor; they really cooperated with us.

"We want them to continue to cooperate with us. This one is going to last for a short period. The governor, commissioner and agency are aware of what they are going through right now and we are doing everything possible to ensure free flow of traffic, and to reduce the burden on them," he stated, adding: "The project will finish in the next few weeks; because of its effects on the traffic, we are trying to reduce the construction works, so as to allow free flow of traffic. By the end of February, we should complete the project," he said.
