A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Fatai Mojeed, says the state House of Assembly will ensure appropriate funds are allocated to the ministry of transportation to enable it to curb gridlock on the roads.

Mojeed, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Transportation, spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.

He said that the committee would support the ministry in its bid to ensure freer and safer roads in the state.

"In terms of budget, we shall sit down together and look at areas to improve transport system before the budget is passed.

"In terms of funding, we are going to make sure that appropriate funds are allocated to the ministry to make sure that we have free flow of traffic in Lagos State," he said.

Mojeed, who represents Ibeju-Lekki constituency of the state on the platform of the APC, said the lawmaker would support the ministry to install more traffic lights across the state.

He said that measures that would enhance the operation of the Lagos State Drivers Institute would be facilitated by the committee to end impunity on roads.

"I was part of the lawmakers that passed the bill on traffic into law in 2012 and presently we are working on all the existing laws to make sure there is full compliance," Mojeed said.

The chairman said the committee was ready to meet with various transport unions on the need to ensure full compliance of traffic laws to curb gridlock.

"It is the responsibility of this government to ensure security of her citizens at home, at work, on waterways, on rail and on roads.

"We will make sure that the lives of people are secure as they commute," he said.

Mojeed commended Gov. Ambode for facilitating the repair of 282 roads in six months, saying it would reduce traffic and hardship on Lagos roads.

He said that the injection of more mass transit buses into the transportation system would also help to improve challenges in the sector.

The chairman promised that the committee would also intensify effort to check all illegal commercial transport operations in the state.

He said that the committee would give the executive the necessary support to check disregard for laws, impunity and recklessness on Lagos roads and waterways. (NAN)
