Why We Suspended Three FAAN Staff - Minister

The Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika has ordered the immediate suspension of Nnmadi Azikiwe International Airport Manager, it's terminal manager and the head of aviation security (AVSEC) at the airport following a serious security breach at the airport on Saturday.

All three staff are under the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The minister who visited the airport Sunday on a fact -finding mission following the security breach said laxity by officials would not be tolerated specially at the airports.

On Saturday December 26, 2015, at about midnight, passengers of Turkish Airline forced their way to the Tarmac and prevented an Turkish Airlines plane from departing on schedule because the airline had failed to deliver the luggage of its passengers two days after they arrived Nigeria. They had arrived Nigeria on 24th December, 2015 but the airline failed to convey their luggage to Abuja. The angry passengers had returned to airport on the 26th December based on the advice of the Turkish Airlines to collect their luggage but the luggage didn't arrive yet, there wasn't explanations from Turkish Air management, our reporter gathered at the airport.

Our reporter also gathered that, after the passengers number about 50 poured on the Tarmac and prevented the airline from flying in excess three hours, the Turkish Air station manager came to write an undertaken that the bags would be delivered yesterday and they did eventually.

However, the minister said what happened must be investigated and appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken.

The explanations of the personnel on ground are not satisfactory because the primary purpose of government is to protect life and property of citizens, the minister noted.

According to him the government of the day promised security and the aviation sector can't fail on that score especially in this era of insurgency and global terrorism.

"We will not condone that. I have ordered an investigation into the matter. The Airport manager, the terminal manager and the head of airport security in Abuja should hand over to the next men in rank pending the outcomes of the investigation," he announced.

As to the airline, he said the passenger protection unit of the NCAA would investigate how compliant the airline is. and appropriate actions will be taken.
